New Delhi [India], July 26 (ANI): As the first week of the monsoon session of Parliament witnessed logjam, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said that opposition’s only concern is whether government will discuss the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being carried out in Bihar or it will try to “evade its responsibilities”.
“Our only concern was whether the central government would discuss SIR within the House. The government is providing various technical reasons, including one that if the discussions on the Election Commission and electoral process are held within the House, then who will answer? The government should not give excuses,” Gogi told reporters on Friday.
“There are many provisions under which you can discuss the electoral process. If there is intent, discussions on SIR can be conducted as per the rules. If not, then you can easily evade your responsibilities by using various techniques,” he added.
The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar has erupted a massive row in the country, with the opposition INDIA bloc alleging that it will delete a significant chunk of voters.
Several senior Congress leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and party leader Priyanka Gandhi, also participated in the protest on Friday. The MPs marched from the Gandhi statue on the Parliament premises ahead of the start of the day’s session and tore the posters on the SIR in a symbolic rejection of the revision exercise.
The first week of the Monsoon Parliament session witnessed repeated disruptions and adjournments. Several opposition parliamentarians submitted adjournment motions and suspension of business notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively.
The House will reconvene on July 28.
As per the latest data released by the Election Commission of India on July 25, 99.8 per cent of Bihar electors have been covered so far in the Special Intensive Revision exercise.
Forms of 7.23 crore electors have been received and digitised; the names of all these electors will be included in the Draft Electoral Roll. The digitisation of forms, along with BLO reports, of the remaining electors will also be completed by August 1, 2025, the poll body stated. (ANI)
