Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 4 (ANI): The onset of the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh has led to significant disruptions across the state, with heavy rains causing the closure of over 115 roads and the disruption of 212 electricity supply schemes.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has reported these figures since the monsoon began on June 27, 2024.
In a statement, Onkar Chand Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Government, provided an update on the current situation.
“The monsoon has approached Himachal Pradesh on June 27, 2024, with rain reported across the state. So far, 115 roads have been closed due to the heavy rain, and 212 electricity transformers have been affected, hampering the electricity supply. Additionally, 17 water supply schemes have been disrupted,” he said.
Sharma emphasized that the government has taken proactive measures to manage the situation. “We have prepared and pre-positioned men, material, and machinery at various locations. We are making efforts to clear the roads as quickly as possible.”
The monsoon rains have also resulted in a tragic loss of life, with nearly 20 people having died in various accidents over the past week. However, it is important to note that these deaths were not due to floods or rain-related incidents. The estimated financial loss in the state has reached one crore rupees so far.
Sharma urged tourists to exercise caution and adhere to local advisories. “I would appeal to all tourists visiting the state to follow the advisory of the district administration and avoid visiting rivers and streams. Even during the summer, over thirty people died due to drowning in the state.”
Reflecting on last year’s extreme weather, Sharma highlighted the government’s readiness. “Last year, there was 400% extra rainfall in the state, but due to the pre-positioning of men, material, and machinery, we were able to save lives. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted a normal monsoon this year, and we hope not to face any extreme weather conditions. However, the state government and administration are ready for any eventuality.”
As the monsoon continues, residents and visitors are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. (ANI)
